5 Ways to Make the Space Under Your Stairs Functional
Often the space under the staircase becomes a wasted space despite its unlimited potential. In this article, we've highlighted various ways that you can spruce up the area under the stairs and minimize the wasted space.
Library Under the Stairs
If you're an avid reader, you're likely already having trouble finding space to store all of your books. Take a page out of this designers book and transform the space under the stairs into a beautiful library. To achieve this style, create a barrier of thin wooden boards to separate and make shelves. It's important to ensure that the shelves are a minimum of 10 inches deep in order to be able to successfully display an assortment of books.
Planters + Plants
Lately it seems like plants are being added to almost every area of the home. We've recently covered the trend of plants in the bathroom, and now one of the latest trends is incorporating them into the empty space under the stairs. By adding plants under the steps it will not only freshen up the area but also purify the air. It's important, however, to keep in mind that you'll need to choose plants like snake plant, dragon tree, peace lily, or calathea that can thrive in shaded conditions.
You can never have too much storage and luckily the space under the stairs provides ample opportunities for multiple storage solutions. You should consider various styles of storage depending on where your stairs are located in the home. If you have a staircase near your front entrance then consider cubbies, with hooks and shelves so you can easily declutter the entrance of shoes, coats, and backpacks. If, however, you have a staircase in a corner of a basement (like shown above), then perhaps storage that includes flat files and a credenza would be more beneficial.
If you are one that likes to entertain guests, then consider transforming the space under the stairs into an intimate socialization centre. It's important to be considerate of space limitations under the stairs, however, since you wouldn't want your cozy space complete with furniture to be unusable due to the stairs being a little too low.
As working from home becomes an increasing trend, some have considered using the space under the stairs as their private office. While the results are usually a space that is secluded, this is highly dependent on the layout of the stairs. You wouldn't want to set up a home office in an area that would experience heavy foot traffic either on the staircase or in the surrounding area.
