How to Create a Cohesive Design Scheme For Your Home

When it comes to your home, there’s something about having a particular scheme that brings everything together and gives it a unique look. This will help separate it from those that have a cookie cutter style where one place is indistinguishable from the one right next to it. But how can you create a design scheme for your home?

If you aren’t sure how to fulfill your own design scheme, you can always hire a full service residential interior design company. They’re here to help you come up with some ideas for yourself, though. Some of the advice might seem to conflict, but that’s why there are so many unique homes out there - what works for one might not work for the other.

Let It Evolve Over Time

While it might be tempting to do it all at once, you should decorate a room at a time and always be willing to swap out items. That will keep the place from having rooms that look too similar.

Only Have Items That You Like

This strategy can also help keep you from getting too much clutter and give your place more of a minimalistic look. A room without a lot of items in it can be a very calming one since you won’t have to clean as much as you would if you had a lot of items lying around.

But only get the ones that really make you feel fulfilled. Don’t buy things that you don’t like, even if it seems like everyone else is buying them. That will wind up being a waste of money, and you likely won’t recoup the money if you put it up for sale on an app.

Try to Have a Balance of Items

Yes, there are a lot of new things out there that you might want to buy, but it’s nice to balance out your home by having a mix of older items among the newer ones. That will keep the place from looking too sterile.

If you do that, then you will have a place that looks very lived in, rather than a place that was recently renovated and new items were put there to make it look appealing to certain buyers.

Get a Color Palette and Stick With It

Here’s a part of the home design that is really subjective. You might like bright colors all around your home, but it might be a better idea to go with more of a neutral one, with several shades of blue being a good common thread. Just avoid having ones that clash with each other - that can make the place look a lot more chaotic than you intended.

Another train of thought here is to choose different colors that still tell a story and use both the paint and the furniture to lay out the theme. There are a lot of combinations that can make your place stand out.

Flooring Can Play a Big Part

There’s something about walking into your home and being able to look down at a floor that has a soothing color. If you have flooring that is also comfortable to walk on, then that will add to the feeling of relaxation when you come home.

You can pick a couple of materials for your floor and then keep a consistent look for the main rooms and maybe spice up other rooms, like the bathroom or laundry room, with tiles. If you have a similar rug color in all the rooms, then it will make the place feel familiar.

Try To Mix Up Furniture

Yes, it can be tempting to try to solve a bunch of decorating issues by getting several sets of furniture. As nice as it might seem, you’re adding to the sterile environment by having these pieces of furniture from the same maker. There’s no variety at all.

Instead, have some old chairs around your modern-looking table. Take your regular sofa and have some sleek-looking chairs around them. Do this around each room, and you will find things looking very cohesive.

If there is one main thing you want to focus on is to set the identity of your place early on. Imagine yourself talking to someone else and answering the question about what the idea was behind the home design. You want to easily sum up the ideas with something like an “80s-themed California home,” though wearing big shoulder pads and skinny neckties are optional.

Stick to the same style throughout the house - unless you want your guests to feel like they have walked through a time machine each time they enter a new room. Don’t be modern in one room and then bohemian in the next one.

Having a cohesive home design scheme can make it a wonderful place to live in. There will be something comforting about returning to it each day after work. Your family will also enjoy living in a well-designed home.
