Outdoor Fitness Equipment: Trail or Cluster?

When the concept of exercising outdoors became popular, many parks accommodated the trend by installing equipment such as pull-up bars and other more challenging units along their trails. The installation of the equipment was proven to be advantageous to those accustomed to rigorous exercise, however, it was alienating to those that live more sedentary lives. So instead of spacing the equipment out along a trail, some have found it to be more beneficial to cluster the equipment together.

For individuals that have difficulty with long walking distances or have mobility impairments, having the equipment dispersed along a trail is rather isolating. So one way to be more inclusive is to put the equipment by the trailhead, near a restroom or near a playground. By having the equipment located near a playground specifically, parents or grandparents can supervise their children (or grandchildren) playing on the playground equipment while they exercise in the outdoor fitness space.

In addition to offering an ease of supervision, having the equipment clustered will also allow individuals to work out together in closer proximity. So rather than feeling isolated along a path, users can encourage each other throughout their workout routine. This can only be successfully done, however, if users have plenty of options with the equipment.

When considering the equipment in the space, it’s important that you include a variety of equipment that can be used by an assortment of individuals. As everyone will have different needs or wants when it comes to their exercising goals, including equipment that can be adjusted will help them achieve their goals and maintain the inclusivity of the space.

Ultimately, creating an outdoor fitness space with clustered equipment is the better option for your community if you’re looking to make the space inclusive and engaging. The space will become a destination that people are more likely to go to and actually use compared to a trail that has just a few units, or a few units scattered along a trail.
