Project Highlight: Acme Fresh Market

For a new store location, Acme Fresh Market's designers looked to Crossville products to create a modern yet warm interior space that would endure the heavy abuse that a grocery store floor bears from both wheeled carts and foot traffic.

Acme Fresh Market is a 125 year-old chain of grocery stores with 17 locations throughout northeastern Ohio. When the Akron-based business opened a new location in Green, the design team from Schumacher Designs looked to Crossville products to create a modern yet warm interior space that would endure the heavy abuse that a grocery store floor bears from both wheeled carts and foot traffic.

With more than 15,600 square feetpace, the flooring design required solutions that would both create a cohesive look and differentiate spaces in the store; with these goals in mind, the design team specified not just one Crossville product but a total of seven styles from the Speakeasy, Reclamation, and Cross Colors collections (discontinued).

The floor at the entrance of the store pays homage to the business’ state heritage with the design of an Ohio Star quilt pattern created in Crossville porcelain tile. The Ohio Star is a particularly popular pattern often used by the state’s Amish quilters, and the Schumacher team recreated the Star—a nine-patch block made of quarter-square triangles around a central square—using the versatile Cross Colors products in the tones Empress White, Seal Taupe, and Antico Taupe. The stars are framed by Crossville’s innovative concrete-wood hybrid look Reclamation in the color Whiskey Lullaby, that adds a modern, industrial touch in a 24”x24” format.

Reclamation is again utilized in the store’s Good Day Café, where sleek, modern-style white chairs and tables offer juxtaposition to the warm tone of the porcelain tile. The space is an oasis within the store, offering shoppers a place to relax and enjoy a drink or meal from the store’s prepared food section.

For the produce, meat, and bakery areas, the Schumacher team specified SpeakEasy planks in Bank Roll, Zoot Suit, and Sweet Georgia Brown. SpeakEasy offers the beautiful look of timeworn hardwood in long-wearing porcelain stone—an attractive and durable solution to designate these unique areas of the store.

To insure minimal maintenance and ease of cleaning long term, the design team opted to have much of the specified tile coated in Cross-Sheen® by Crossville. This innovative, invisible finish—a proprietary innovation of Crossville—protects tile from the defacing effects of scuffs and stains by allowing for fast removal of unsightly marks with only mild cleaners.

For the local community that Green’s Acme Fresh Market was built to serve, the great look of Crossville’s designer collection certainly enhances what’s in store during the shopping experience.
