As part of this year's eVolo Skyscraper Competition, Hasseef Rafiei received an honourable mention for the Pod Skyscraper design that uses 3D printing and elements of Tetris to make an apartment complex.  

The proposed concept is for 3D printers located at the top of the apartment building to print the residents new apartment and then transfer it to a crane which lowers it into place. The building inspiration is said to have come from the famed Nakagin Capsule Tower which is shown above.

The pods would take a similar form to the ones that form the Nakagin Capsule Tower however, the pods wont be already in place like shown above. Instead, as the pods are lowered into place, they would be plugged onto the mega-structure through an automated system that has calculated the position for each pod. 

If a tenant wishes to have a larger living space, they can purchase multiple pods that would then be placed together.  They can also choose which amenities they'd prefer to be included in their designs.

In the event of disused or faulty pods, they would be dismantled, kept in storage or brought back to the printer. This would keep the apartment functioning in a closed functional loop and ensures that the building doesn't become outdated.
