Tips for Designing an Apartment When You Live Alone

Moving into an apartment alone for the first time can be a daunting experience, however one of the most exciting things about living alone is that there is no one to compromise with when it comes to decorating. You have the opportunity to make your new home exactly the way you want. So here are some tips on how to decorate your apartment to suit you perfectly.

The main elements

When choosing essential household items like furniture and bedding make sure you’re buying good quality products that will last. It is better to invest more money in the beginning so you’re not frequently buying furniture over the years. Another consideration is whether you would be able to move the furniture around the apartment yourself when you like. Also when it comes to your choices try to buy styles and colours that are unlikely to date quickly or you may change your mind about later on. Keeping it simple and timeless is a safe bet.

Accessories

Pillows, art, ornaments, lamps, rugs and other accessories are where you should be creative and look for pieces that really compliment your style and make you feel at home. These will give colour and personality to your apartment. It is also worth thinking about having a statement piece in your apartment. Also don’t forget that plants and flowers are always great to liven up the apartment.

Organise your space well

Apartments are often smaller, and there’s not always a lot of space to work with. So make sure you are utilising all the rooms for functionality. Set up the rooms as spaces you will use daily. They can be a home office, lounge room or entertaining area, and a space you can relax (even if that is just your bedroom). Put more storage where you can, and everything you choose to go into those areas should be things you enjoy looking at as well as serve a function to the room and you. By decorating this way you will avoid clutter in your apartment.

The bathroom

Do your best to create a good organisation system for your bathroom. Have designated storage spaces to put your products. You may need to buy another cabinet or more shelving, but it will be worth it. There’s nothing worse than not having enough space in your bathroom to get ready. Also try to choose a mirror that is large enough and has good natural lighting, as it may be the only one in your apartment.

The kitchen

Organise your kitchen to suit your needs and your taste. You want the place where you cook to make sense to you. Store your utensils and appliances where it feels natural for you to place them. Only buy appliances you know you will use, and choose styles that won’t take up too much space but still compliment the style of the apartment. You’ll be cooking for one most of the time so choose appliances that accomodate for that and not much more or they will just take up too much space.

Although you are living alone, there will often be times when you are entertaining others. So make sure you have an open space in your apartment that caters to this comfortably, this will probably be your living room. Also having a small bar area or kart stocked and serving dishes will never go astray.
