Builder/General Contractor: KGM Construction

Project Year: 2020

Location: Carmel Valley, CA

Packed with off-grid tech, this three-bedroom, three-bath contemporary home with a mid-century modern flare is built with fire resistance and sustainability on the forefront of design. Andrew Goodwin Designs collaborated with the owners who are seasoned industrial designers with the intent to build a home that celebrated the stunning views that overlook the Carmel Valley.

To avoid disturbing the dozens of old-growth oak trees, and to mitigate the site’s elevation change of 75-plus feet, the architects opted to lift the 2,330-square-foot, home into the tree canopy, ensuring spectacular views that overlook the valley in three directions-west, south and east. The All Weather multi slide sliding doors, swing door and windows frame views of the landscape and flood the interior with natural light.

Designed to achieve net zero energy, the house features solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, a raised concrete floor, deep roof eaves, recycled and renewable materials for passive cooling and heating. Lastly, the use of a steel-framed prefabricated structural system/deck was chosen for fire resistance.
