Wall Art for Beginners

Wall Art for Beginners

Feeling like a total beginner who is afraid to fail in the wall art department? You are not the only one. If your walls could talk, what would they tell you? We think they would rather see you try and fail than to leave everything as it is for several years. Every wall can and should be different, that is the beauty of it. If you are insecure about your sense of design, we are here to help and point out some essential steps which will be useful whether you want to hang a custom metal art work or a family portrait picture.

Choosing the Right Spot

An empty wall is like a blank canvas, which is great, but the problem is, you do not know where to start. Consider other elements in the room. Is there a bed or a fireplace? Because if you want to hang something right above them, make sure it is centered. Also, pay attention to the height of your walls. Is there enough space for the wall to "breathe" around the artwork? You can always use a laser level to hang pictures without struggling too much.

Consider the Size of Walls and Artworks

If you like having an empty wall, but you also don’t want to have more than one artwork on it, choose one large-scale artwork. Large paintings will cover a decent amount of surface and become a nice focal point. On the other hand, hanging one small picture may look strange, and too small compared to the wall surface. Instead, you can group several smaller pictures and arrange them in a way so they can cover a more significant amount of space. But keep in mind that if your room is already full of stuff, this can make it look more cluttered.

How to Pick the Right Style

This is a difficult question because wall art comes in so many different shapes, forms, and styles. From modern, industrial, minimalistic, to retro and vintage-inspired decorations, your options in terms of style are endless. So, find something that you like, and see will it fit your interior. Take a good look around your home, and pay attention to the colors and shapes of the items you already have.

How to Properly Light the Wall Art

Whether it is natural or artificial, lighting is a significant factor to consider when having wall art in your home. You do not exactly need to have professional museum lighting, but there are some tricks and tips for lighting art at home. Since natural light is the best, consider where the main source of outdoor light is in the room when hanging art. In case you do not have large windows, or you want to admire your art at any time of the day or night, you can choose between several types of lighting. Accent and track lights are a particularly popular choice, but also small picture lights. Just make sure you are using UV filters. Otherwise, you are putting your artwork at risk.

Affordable Wall Art Ideas

Do you have a painting you got as a gift, but there is no one to hang it, and you do not know how to wire artwork for hanging? Or you saw some expensive decorations, and now you think you cannot settle for less? When it comes to wall art, pretty much everything can be done as a DIY project, which will make everything a lot more personalized, and it will save you money. Here are some ideas:

  • Old black and white photos. If you have a bunch of old family photos, now it is time to frame them and hang them on a wall. You will get a unique wall art with a special meaning.

  • Empty frames. Find some vintage picture frames at a thrift shop and paint them in black, gold, or white and hang them without any pictures in them. You will be surprised how good and modern this can look.

  • Display a collection. If you have several hats or a collection of something else, display them on a wall.

  • Dried flowers. Find some colorful flowers, herbs, greenery and press them with some heavy books, and wait until they are completely dry and flat. Then just tape them on a piece of white paper, frame them, hang them, and voila.

  • Paint. Have no art skills? Sure you do. If you do not mind having an abstract painting in your home, you can easily make a custom one. See which colors go well with the rest of your interior, find a canvas, and start playing with colors. Or let your children do it, they will know what to do.

Now is the Time to Hang Some Wall Art

An experimental study inspected images of more than 54,000 private living rooms on a popular renting website. The results showed that around 62% of listings had some type of wall art. That is around ⅔, which is a lot. But that is also great news because it tells us that people are paying more and more attention to their interior design. You can be one of them. Decorating your living space may change the way you feel about your home. It will give it a character, and perhaps help you discover a hidden passion. If you do not like something, you can easily remove it and start all over. No more excuses, your home can also like from the covers of magazines. You just have to give your inner interior designer a chance.
