Project Highlights

Planters Unlimited - Sharp Grossmont Hospital Project

We started with our designer wall panels made from durable fiberglass but mimicking a washed woodgrain design. Then, we mounted our fiberglass Madera Rectangular Planters in a checkerboard design at the top, with a row of three planters at the ground level, just under the Sharp cutout sign. Since all products are made of fiberglass, they are made to withstand the elements for years and remain beautiful. And the UV-protected artificial plants in the planters were made weather- and fade-resistant so that they would look green and vibrant no matter the season—and without the care of live plants.

Desiring to design a fitness area that would truly benefit the surrounding community, project planners selected units with activities for those at nearly every level of fitness. The 13 units in the Fitness Zone accommodate 38 simultaneous users, offering an extensive array of exercises for stretching and strengthening.

It took a five-man crew only three days from start to finish to complete this parking lot job. Traditional asphalt rejuvenation can take much longer, but StreetBond® coatings are quick and easy to install. The decision to use StreetBond® coatings enabled National Pavement to use the existing 12-year-old asphalt instead of laying down new asphalt. To prep the area, the team removed the concrete bumpers and rebar, then removed the existing striping. Upon lifting the existing paint, the crew ran into a problem that is common with traditional striping—it left pits in the asphalt. This occurs because traditional paint, unlike StreetBond® coatings, does not flex with the asphalt in the heat and cold, causing the asphalt to pit beneath the paint. The team was able to remedy this by heating the asphalt, then compressing and raking the asphalt to smooth down the pits. The crew also encountered a previous asphalt sealer on the pavement; StreetBond® coatings typically should not be placed on top of seal coat-type products, but the previously used product was so worn that StreetBond® coating could be successfully applied.

Artist Darren Goins was instrumental in selecting the Oasis bike shelter, a popular model from Duo-Gard’s architecturally designed styles. The basic Oasis features two large circles that support a curved roof, clean and contemporary. The roof is an 8mm translucent polycarbonate batten system in a bronze tint; the frame is galvanized steel.
